I followed this guide and managed to get 1024x768 working (letterboxed) on the desktop, but when I execute a game it switches back to 1440x900:

He says in the guide that it happens because of refresh rates defaulting to 75 or something, but I downloaded a program called ReForce that sets all my refresh rates to 60, so I've ruled that problem out.

My setup...

1440x900 Samsung SyncMaster 906BW
XFX 7900GS
169.21 Forceware Nvidia drivers

Any ideas?

Thanks

edit edit: nevermind, none of the games I've tried have worked so far.

After 95 or something release their drivers are broken. Native aspect scaling works for some people (with or without tricks) and not at all for others (like myself).

I have given up and will make sure next time I buy a new desktop PC (few years?) to buy a monitor with its own scaling options.

For now, stretching FTW!

Not for me.

It works under Vista but not under XP.

It seems it is working in XP, at least with 174.74 drivers. I noticed that when I selected a resolution than the native of my monitor, on its OSD it reported being at 1280x1024 resolution, so I created the same resolutions on Nvidia's control panel, but modified the active pixels and it's finally working again.

What do you mean modified the active pixels?

In the Nvidia Control Panel, when creating a custom resolution, go to advanced, in timing put manual, and in back end parameters there are two setting, active horizontal pixels and active vertical lines. Mine had 1280x1024 as default, I changed it to my monitor's native res (1440x900).
