This has been listed under Widescreen Confirmed Solutions. I have a few additions, but i can't post in that thread.
It is true that the options.ini can be edited to fit the native resolution.
But there is a little difference in fullscreen and windowed.
Like reported in fullscreen the FOV is the same as in 4:3 but the game will use the widescreen width to display the game, so everything is slightly distorted.
In windowed mode it is different. There the FOV is adjusted to the wider screen, so the 3D graphics are not distorted. You can verify this on the title screen. The horizontal FOV is the same, but in with widescreen settings the vertical FOV is reduced to fit to the smaller height, so the soldier in the bottom left is cut off. The interface is still stretched, though
But there are other problems in the windowed mode. The mouse cursor lags and flickers, you can't scroll by moving the mouse to the border of the screen and the game stutters in windowed mode on my computer. So in the end, this is not really the better option.
After playing some levels, i think the game looks great with the resolution set to the native resolution of my widescreen display and playing in fullscreen mode. The slightly distorted proportions doesn't really matter.
