jackfuste Works great. Thanks a lot.
Too bad there still a bug occurs, after any cutscene the picture gets stretched. I have to switch resolutions or restart the game to fix that.

I tested 2560x1600 res and the fonts and green health bar are fixed. jackfuste, thank you for fixing this.

The game still requires the -window switch for non-native resolutions, otherwise it crashes out with an error. Taking screenshots in Steam works, but it truncates 13 lines so that the screenshots are 2560x1587. I noted this previously in the Steam forums.

An AutoHotkey script that maximizes the game window can be downloaded from a link in the Steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1963433

No crashes for me on full screen.

MSxDOS, can you please explain how you're getting this to work? Are you setting the resolution in the game or in the config.lua file? What resolution are you choosing?

Hi

By using -window mode and changing config.lua file I managed to force Spellforce to work with 1680x1050 resolution. However it has all annoying issues You described like no health bar, tiny font etc.
I was happy to find out that there is a solution for this, but exe files attached to this topic are not working with my Spellforce Platinum Edition version and I am not able to patch game to 1.54 version.
I would be very grateful for fixing my exe file.

Here it is: SpellForce.7z

Thanks for help!

Hi, I tried the 1920x1080 exe and it 'works' with my Spellforce Universe copy of Spellforce. However, as mentioned by MSxDOS there is a pretty significant issue with stretching after every cutscene. In fact I thought this fix was completely useless to begin with, because I tried it with a brad new install and character, and there is a cutscene when you first enter the game, so everything was stretched off the bat.

If this cutscene issue could be resolved, that would be excellent. This solution is better than the other widescreen 'fix' involving borderless windowed mode (that method caused a glassy ripple effect over the whole screen), but It still needs work.

I'm unable to use any of the widescreen fixes above 1366x768 or it immediately crashes out with the error below. My video card is an AMD Radeon 6870 with the latest Catalyst drivers.

Update: I installed a Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT and the game runs fine at 2560x1600 with the widescreen fix. I uploaded screenshots to my Steam profile. I can even get into 'Options' without it crashing out. The problem might be with AMD Radeon cards or Catalyst drivers, or both. Has anybody successfully run this with a DX11 card from Nvidia? If it works then it would narrow down the problem.

It might be helpful to mention the type of video cards you're using.

I'm almost finished with the 'Order of Dawn' campaign with the 2560x1600 fix (still using a Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT) and the game has run flawlessly so far. I've uploaded a bunch of screenshots to my Steam profile.

I don't even notice that the game is stretched; it looks perfectly fine to me and anyone who has never played it won't know the difference.

No, it is noticeably distorted after running any cutscene, and you must restart the game to revert it:

Good:

Bad (after cutscene):

Good:

Bad (after cutscene):

This is unacceptable distortion, and a major inconvenience to be restarting the game after every cutscene. I'll stick to 4:3 until this is resolved. And to answer your question, I'm using a GTX 580 3GB.

And on a side note, why does no one ever complain about the shadow bug in this game?

http://youtu.be/FJttmzT8FAg

One of the most amazing things about Spellforce when it came out was it's beautiful real-time dynamic shadows, but the shadows have been broken for ages now. They're only rendered properly on less than half the screen, see them being drawn and undrawn on the right hand side? I see plenty of Spellforce vids on YouTube where the issue is evident, but no one ever seems to acknowledge the problem. If you ask me, this is a bigger issue than the widescreen thing. I'm sick of having to use ugly blob shadows (normal).

Something worth noting is that this widescreen method uses Vert-.

16:9:

4:3:

Just as the screen is extended vertically for 5:4:

5:4:

But it's also interesting that the HUD is distorted for 5:4 - pretty sloppy considering 1280x1024 is an officially available res.

You can remove the stretching after a cutscene by double switching resolutions i.e. to 1152x864 and then back to 1280x1024. Sucks, but better then restarting the game.
The shadows are buggy for some people, including me. Switching them from Very High to High solves the problem partially.
The game is optimized for 4:3 only, so other screen ratios will result HUD stretching and other issues.

The vert- is not because of the widescreen fixes. It occurs with the original exe. Below you'll see caps in both 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 (reduced 50%). I moved the screen so that the glowing eyes of the monument were top-center. In the widescreen cap, the building at the bottom is almost completely gone. I don't know how to increase the FOV. There is a console command to make the camera free-floating (which is how I took some of my screenshots), but it makes the game unplayable.

Thanks in advance

Can the game be made to work at 2560x1080?

The original game is stretched and the modified exe launches with black screen.

Hello,

I tried several .exe files, but none changed anything. I'm still stuck with 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions.
I'm using Spellforce Platinum v1.52, this is my exe. Can you please fix it so I can play SF in 1366x768?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Drakon

Last year you uploaded a .7z file with a bunch of widescreen fixes. Could you please provide another with 2560x1600, 1920x1200, and 1920x1080 fixes with corrected FOV?

Is there someone here who can continue jackfuste's awesome work? The last one is changing AR after every cutscene. If anyone here can fix it i'll upload the spellforce platinum exe (v1.54) I need one for 1920x1080 resolution. :(

Awesome work, Jackfuste! However, the H+ and the AR bug fix were only included in your 1366x768 exe, right? Or were there any updates for other resolutions (here) I may have missed? I tried all of your 1680x1050 exes, but they all were V- and had the AR switching back to default (stretched) after in-game cutscenes :(

Jackfuste, you really has done a great piece of work.

I have 1.52 version and would like you guys if you could make or maybe you already have .exe file with 1366*768 resolution, or 1920*1080 res foe 1.52 version of Spellforce? Because i have only 1024*768 resolution, it's ok, but horizontal quality could be a bit higher.

Thanks for help in advance!!!

Jackfuste, you did a great job. I've tried one of you exe's on my 1366x768 screen, and it worked, I enjoyed a game to late hours. However when I launched game the next day the resolution did not fit to the screen. I repeated all steps, and it doesn't work. In addition I tryied solve problem by setting config.lua and it doesn' work too. I don't know what to do, playing in windowed mode doesn't satisfies me. Win 7 64 HE here. Thanks for help.

EDIT
Forget to say, Spellforce PE by GOG

Be really good to get the AR bug fixed for other resolutions, I use 1920x1080 myself and while the previously hacked exe for it works, it bugs out after every cut scene..

EDIT: I've managed to extract fonts and language files from my version and inject them into platinum, so I can now use the patch
If someone want to know how I did it - that is what I found on sf froum:
Spoiler:
1. polish 1.53 version pak files have 05 00 02 first bytes in hex
2. 1.52, 1.54 pak files have 04 00 00 first bytes in hex
3. you need replace 05 00 02 to 04 00 00, so you can open them in dragon unpacker
4. extract them into spellforce folder directly, you need to do it in order

Well, I tried to make 4 new launchers with higher resolutions: 2880x1620, 3840x2160, 5120x2880 and 7680x4320 so I can use them to downsample using GeDoSaTo. It was very easy a few days ago with Silent Hill 2, just searched the hex values for a specific resolution, change it with another one, done, worked great.

With Spellforce I can't find any resolutions in the exe. I tried to search for 800x600 for example but could't find it. (200300005802 right? )

Could use some newbie tips on this, I'm trying to make my own res. fixes...well I'm trying at least. :shifty:

Tried again today with the gog platinum exe and another hex editor. Searched for one of the resolutions (1280x1024) and found 3 entries, changed all of them to another res. (5120x2880). Then I searched for the AR of the res. (1280x1024 = 5:4) and again I found 3 entries and changed them to 16:9. (5120x2880 = 16:9).

Started the game with the modified exe (res was set to 1280x1024 or res 7 in the cfg) but "surprisingly" It didn't work so I'm pretty much out of ideas.

I too would like to know how to make my own. I'd rather just play the game in 4:3 without a distorted UI, but I need 4:3 resolutions larger than 1600x1200.

On a side note, why are you messing around with half-arsed downsampling methods in an old DX9 game like this where any SSAA should work fine. SGSSAA or even OGSSAA should work perfectly in this game and look 100x better than downsampling. Personally I haven't even tried any form of full scene SSAA yet. I'm just using 8xAA+8xTransparency AA, and that seems to be sufficient (It's not like the game has any shader aliasing, so MSAA+transparency AA is all you need theoretically, although often Nvidia's Transparency AA 'misses' out some specific transparencies, so if I see any of that I'll try a full scene SSAA).

Hello All,
I came here because I'm getting crashes when I start the game which I purchased from GOG sometime ago.

I have downloaded the spellforce_pe.7z but how do I get this to work so it wont crash?

It continues to give the message "Desired resolution not found. Please install latest drivers!"

Thanks

Hi everyone !
First thanks for the great job on the .exe of this fabulous game to enjoy the wide screen suport : ) !
I've a problem with it anyway. Simple I guess, but I can't resolve it By myself :

The patched "exe" from this site put the version automatically to 1.54.75000, wich is the last patch for the diamond version. But the steam version, Platinum, is just in v1.52.64763.

That means I can allready take my old save (from v1.52...) and play with the new exe rom the site, but I can't take the new save made with the exe on this site and play it with my original exe. The game check and say that the version of the game is more recent than the actual game.

That is a bit annoying in many case :
- I've an other computer wich is in 4/3, so I can't use your exe, and so, I am not able to play with the saves I did with the exe from this site.
- Because the version of the game is not the same, I can't connect with the others in LAN (lol, yes between my new pc -with your exe- and my 4/3 old one -still in 1.52...- ).

What I though to go through each problem :

1 - It should exist two version of your exe(s)
one in v1.52.64763 and
one in v1.54.75000
(This way we could simply managed by ourself the exe we want, and be able to open the save by ourselves.)
+
2 - Include in each the "original" resolution that are allready in the game settings
(If it was so, I hadn't post here, and replace the 4/3 exe from my game (v1.52) by the new 4/3 exe from your site (1.54) on my 4/3 computer and be able to play LAN : )

Thanks in adanced, hope you'll can help me ^^
++ !

Hi Everyone, I post this to explain and to resume a bit.
I hope it could help and will be as clear as possible !

First thanks to jackfuste, he did everything. Everything I do is just a condensed recap of his work.
Let's now explain some things you have to know :

• Spellforce: Platinum Edition (Steam) up to date is v1.52
• Spellforce: Diamond Edition up to date is v1.54
• The patched files from jackfuste are v1.54
• It's OK to replace the Steam v1.52 with the 1.54 from this site, the game works like a charm, no problems
• The Patched file you choose have to match exactly your Desktop Resolution (not only the ratio) or you'll have the "up date your drivers" pop up /crash.
• Patched files automatically change the resolution of the game, don't try to change it inGame next.
• To play on LAN every computer must have the same version of the game. Cf my problem above, I've only the steam version and one of my computer is on a 4/3 Desktop, so jackfuste (nice of you) gives me the "Original" exe v1.54 (4/3) that allow me to set all my computer with the v1.54 (some in WideScreen, some in 4/3) and enjoy the coop / Deathmatch mod !

Now you know everything, here are the latest files (from jackfuste, again thanks to you!) :
(this are *.7z files, open it with WinRAR or 7z):

This last one contains Spellforce.exe for :
1024x600
1280x720
1280x768
1360x768
1366x768
1440x900
1600x900
1680x945
1680x1050
1920x1080
2048x1152
2560x1080
2560x1440
2560x1600
(Remember, again, that it must fit exactly your "Desktop" resolution to work)

I hope it will help : )

What about larger resolutions? Resolutions like 3840x2160/'4k' are becoming increasingly popular.

Hi, jackfuste,

Would you consider sharing the procedure you're using, even if it is a cumbersome one?
If not, would you consider making a 5760x1080 (triple 1920x1080) binary?

I've got a gog install.
Clean, untouched binary at

Many thanks

It never ceases to amaze me how much traction this game has. It's definitely among the most overlooked and underrated games on the PC. It's like a movie that didn't do well and then developed a huge cult following afterward.

Well how many RPG+RTS are there? Not much, and Spellforce (1) is one of the best :D .
Also, Spellforce The Order of Dawn is the my very first Video Game that I played ;).

P.S.: Sorry for my broken english xD

Hello,
I would like to ask aswell if there is a way to run it in 3840x2160. I tried to edit the exe from jackfuste with an hex editor changing the differences, which where resolution values. Unfortunately it still says, that the desired resolution was not found.
