The plasma TVs more than likely have rectangle pixels because they're meant for TV and media, not computers.

DVDs use rectangle pixels (720x480). This means that he should be able to watch a DVD without any kind of scaling or interpolation needed.

Interpolating 1280x720 or 1920x1080 to rectangle pixels might result in some better quality, too (versus DVD on a square pixel display), since you already have a higher resolution source.

You certainly do need scaling and interpolation to transform a 720x480 frame into a 1024x768 frame. Those extra pixels don't come from nowhere. In addition, DVD pixels and plasma pixels aren't even the same shape. DVD pixels are 1.186 times longer than they are tall, while plasma pixels are 1.33 times longer than they are tell.

The only way you could watch a DVD fullscreen without any scaling or interpolation is if the screen had 720x480 resolution.

And 1080p on a wide pixel display might look better than DVD on a square pixel, but 1080p on a square pixel display would look best.

I had meant that there would be less interpolation overall since the pixels aren't square. Not sure why I said it wouldn't need any. Either way, it would look better than interpolation on a square pixel since less is needed.

And of course 1080p on a square pixel would look best.
