This probably isn't the thread for this, but here are some examples I've made semi-recently.

F.E.A.R. 2 Powered Armor Unit battle
This video is 2-3 years old.

1m 32s
Overall Bitrate: 6493 Kbps
Video encoder: x264 core 66 r1112M f43e22a

RAGE texture streaming test
This was a short test to show the texture pop issues.
1920x1080
60 FPS
24s (About 1Mb filesize per second)
Overall Bitrate: 8221 Kbps
Video encoder: x264 core 118 r2085 8a62835

Brink sample
Short sample to show off the encoder and settings.
1680x1050
60 FPS
33s (About 1Mb filesize per second)
Overall Bitrate: 8034 Kbps
Video encoder: x264 core 115 r1995 c1e60b9

If VirtualDub is hanging altogether, then you made need to completely delete its program directory and install fresh.

Alternatively (and possibly required), you could try manually changing the capture driver setting in your registry. Search for Virtualdub in regedit, and under its reg entry will be a sub-key named CaptureStartup Driver. Try changing the value of the key to VHScrCap (DirectShow)--assuming you have the VH driver installed. You could also try deleting the value entirely.

Be warned, editing the registry manually can hose your system if you do something wrong. Do not try it unless you are COMPLETELY comfortable with the idea and willing to accept any possible consequences.

It's worth a shot. The odds of the reg edit I mentioned causing a major issue are minimal, but I always preface registry editing with a significant disclaimer to make people realize the potential risks.

Hey. Just signed up to say thank you for the guide. All the other recording tools I used were terrible since I'm running my computer at 2560x1440. Fraps would use 110MB/s, and had a 4gb file limit. And it slowed the hell out of my system, while only maintaining a rate of maybe 20 frames per second. And it's ridiculous on an i7 2600k @5ghz with sli gtx 680's! This method here...I don't even realize it's recorded. Thank you so much again. It's very much appreciated. :)

Happy to help! Vdub still does quite nicely in many use cases, despite the proliferation of recording tools in recent times.
