-JV: hello all
I am with Jonathan, who is artistical director of the next Deus Ex, which will come out at the start of 2011
and he will talk to us about this game
-JV : first question: it's the third game of a serie, won't people who don't know the first two, be penalized about the story of this sequel ?
-JJB : yes absolutely, in fact I think there will be no penalty. it is very important to us that while being faithful to the franchise, while connecting our game to Deus Ex story, it is also important to do a game who could be a "standalone" , so that gamers who aren't familiar with the franchise can begin our game and take pleasure out of it and understand the story and follow the game... very important ... yes
-JV: OK
-JJB : at the same time for the fans, everything is there, they will recognize what happens ...
-JV: some players are a bit anxious and think that this third sequel will be closer to the second, which wasn't ... that good, instead of being closer to the first. What can you say at this level ? Will the liberty of action we had in the first game be actually there in this Deus Ex ?
-JJB: absolutely, I think that, it is there, it is very faithful to the first game. It was our first goal. we concentrated on this when we began the development of Human Revolution before even, before even trying to put our knowledge in, trying to bring our ideas, our creativity ...The first thing we did was to analyse in depth what worked for the first, and also what didn't work as well for the second too. And also what didn't worked as well in the first too, I'll say that there was a couple of small things to correct. But above all, above all, from the good points, we defined 4 main points to found the game on : combat, infiltration, hacking & social interactions. Once we were sure we mastered those, what created this very special, very specific to Deus Ex savor, that we felt inside us while we played. When we were convinced that we mastered them, that we were doing it right when compared to the license and to the first game, at this point we began plugging in our vision, our elements all around this. So I think, because of this process, because of this obligation that we forced on ourselves, I think we created a true Deus Ex who "feel" like the first

-JV: so the player can choose infiltration or action approach? he can really choose different paths
-JJB : absolutely, the same level of creativity is there, we never force the player to choose a particular mode of play, (some canadian french that I don't quite fully get follows for a couple of seconds I'll translate what I understood) there was no "tablos" which was forced to camp, there was no "tablos" which was forced to infiltrate, it is really the big players who oscillate between those different modes available. Exactly as the first game, you can play your own fantasy with those modes of play
-JV: a bit earlier we were talking about liberty of action but will there be, for example, multiple endings in the game depending on the player choices?
-JJB: yes absolutely, it was another thing which was very important to us, that it does base on player actions on the game. I can't precise the number of endings we have or the math that influence the diffusion of an ending over another.But definetely it was a very important variable to us to put in the game.
-JV: how many hours will an average player have to dedicate to finish the game ?
-JJB: I think an average player will take about 20 perhaps 25 hours for ending the game... "the critical path" as we say in quebec *laughs*... the main path... Perhaps more like 20 hours in fact, but we are talking about a Role playing game where there is an enormous number of elements, places to explore, things to find, all that. I think the explorer player who wants to find all the "sidequests" can easily think about 30 to 35 hours without even thinking about the replayability level who is really high... In fact with all the augmentations we have, the way the economic & experience system is balanced, we can't buy all augmentations or bring them all to the MAX, because effectively once you buy an augmentation, you can upgrade them
-JV: you need to make choices
-JBB: make choices. You can't become an expert in everything. So a breat amount of replayability... weapons are also customizable, adding again more variables to the game. And as I said all the "sidequests", all the places to explore, persons to talk to. definetely a fat 30hours and many opportunities to restart all over and have a different experience
-JV: you were talking to us about customizing the character, implants and augmentations ...Can you say more about this ?
-JJB: what can I say to you ... there is several choices, several cybernetics implants, not always visual. there is things like cerebral implants, or occular implants, things which can affect interface as well as character's abilities. Of course there is implants that modify a little how the character looks. So there is a little of "customization" (french + english word : self-explanatory I think) It won't make your character look very different because we wanted a hero who was well defined,who had a presence, who was an icon. So we can't modify him 100% for sure. It was important to us to get an image that anyone can identify easily but definetely variables are there so that you can modify him a little but even if visual modifications are not tremendous, there is a lot of choice for augmentations, adding to that all upgrade levels of each & every augmentation
