Hey guys,

While I await Dragon Age and Wolfenstein, I need something to bide the time. Is Fallout 3 worth playing? I don't want to venture into the gameplay thread due to spoilers.

I hated, repeat, HATED, Oblivion with its idiotic scaling, repetitive landscapes and dungeons, and its made-for-a-distracted-13-yr-old gameplay and plot.

So I am now wary of Bethesda. I loved Morrowind but Oblivion was a massive letdown. Hence am wary to play anything they've released since their journey towards console-domination glory.

Fallout 3 reviews are excellent but I think Bethesda has an elite group of thugs that visit each reviewer to hand deliver the review copy along with a 'Contract of Compliance For A Good Review'.

If it is a great RPG with some shooter action, I think I would like it. If it is a mindless shooter with a threadbare RPG element, I'll stick with my iDracula app.

So...all that to say...yea/nay?

TIA.

Gameplay and plot-wise, it's pretty much Oblivion with some polish added. If you want a really good RPG, get Fallout 1&2 from http://www.gog.com.

Yeah, figured as much. Thanks Hermit, may check out the earlier Fallouts - cool site, btw (gog.com).

Eh, while Fallout 3 wasn't amazing... it was pretty good. My biggest complaint is Games for Windows Live and the requirement of that for the DLC.

The Fallout series is being sold in stores at this moment as a collection.

There's another Wolfenstein coming out? Neat.

Anyway, I'd say yes. It pretty much IS Oblivion with a new face, but i certainly enjoyed it mroe than Oblivion. Plus the DLC gives me a good reason to play through it again. My complaints about it were few and most ahve been adressed with patches and mods.

The patches are pretty awful on the whole, they keep breaking more things than they fix with each patch. I'm waiting for another patch to see if they can fix what they broke with using mods before I reinstall the game.

I played Fallout 3 unpatched, no mods. I'll go through it again with some mods when I can get the time. I didn't encounter any serious bugs that made me think it needed patching. Maybe I'm just lucky.

You'll need the second patch, 1.1, to use mods easily. Without it many mods don't "plugin" automatically and you have to manually edit text files, it's a whole mess.

I have 1.5 and the only real bug I have encountered is that Wadsworth decided it would be fun to hang out hovering over my bed. I am using mods too, the only things I did was use Fallout 3 Mod Manager, which does all the hard work for you.
