no DICE & BF3? :) Hehe... not going to nitpick here. Anyway, had to give my votes for Serious Sam 3 and Croteam. Don't like Codemaster not because of Dirt3 but because of Operation Flashpoint. Looks nice. But their multiplayer, an aspect that I also factor in, is based on p2p networking.

For which, the best or worst? 8)

BF3 is only silver certified, it mostly works but has a few issues so it was never a GOTY contender, despite it being fun.

Nice one guys!

No Witcher 2 mentioned?

Good question. According to the game's DR, you need a fixer to run it in Eyefinity which rules it out.

Voted Croteam and... Dungeon Siege 3.
The whole Serious Sam HD & BFE series deserves a huge thumbs up, but DS3 was this year's biggest surprise for me.

IW is a lost cause, so hopefully a big fat Narrow-Minded Award will help Bethesda pull themselves together and realize multi-mon support is important to RPG fans !!

Sorry but this poll is way to small of a selection. Which gives the impression of steering.

The widescreen game of the year is Batman easily the best complete experience. I think we are bogged down to much in gui support to miss to what extent the art work shines brilliantly in widescreen,
Gotham city in widescreen brings to the table what a breathtaking immersion can bring to immersion levels! A revolutionary experience! ( this coming from someone who was so bored to tears by arkham asylum that was not able to get past the midway point.

Also, nothing as insulting to the wsg community this year than the banning by Blizzard. The Narrow Minded Award definitely needs to go to Blizzard, Diablo commiting the same sins definitely is a day 1 no buy!

Speaking of DAY 1.
bECAUSE OF LOSING kONAMI contract Day 1 studios has layed off a majority of it's workforce!
Merry Xmas!

I don't believe I am nitpicking but this poll is way to narrow to be representative of a fair consideration.

sorry.

There is still something wrong when we rule out what was a compelling experience when played in multi monitor surround, Witcher 2 is easily the most underated major release this year. Definitely Goty material.

In order for a game to of made it into the game of the year list, it must be gold certificated and have near perfect multi-monitor support. So for example the HUD must be centred and in the cash of batman, the game shouldn't swap to vert- at any point.
http://widescreengamingforum.com/dr/batman-arkham-city/en

You'll notice that Battlefield 3 is missing from the GotY list as well. Remember this site has a strong focus on getting proper support for both widescreen and multi-monitor systems, the sites awards are also designed to reflect and reward this.

Not mentioning Portal 2 on this forum is a near-crime.
The game is one of the most original games I played these last 20 (!!) years.
It worked instantly on my 5040x1050 triple screen setup without having to configure a single setting, using all possible graphical options and enhancements the game provides.

Nevertheless, I'll cast my vote.

Thanks for your reply.

Portal 2 may definitely be an awesome game to play, but according to the games DR, the HUD is spanned and the crosshairs disappear on multi-monitor setups, needing a community fix.

We want the winner to have widescreen and surround support that is the standard every game should achieve, and this is why Portal 2 didn't make it into the GOTY voting.

I would also like to point out that virtually any Source engine based games will always have this minor issue. This issue can be traced back all the way to Half-Life 2. Since then, Valve did nothing to add any support nor add any cvar setting to adjust where the HUD elements can be placed. Granted, Portal 2 is a personal favorite favored by many. However, as mentioned, there's consistency and having to set the bar technically high as graded by all of us.

If and when Valve ever updates their Source engine, and back-ports it to fix the issues that plagued all of their Source games, then we can go back and re-evaluate it.

Fair enuff.. ( technical gui concerns )
still...
not acknowledging brilliant graphic work sometimes revolutionary work! due to what such widescreen compositions bring to the interactive table is silly in itself. That would be like not acknowledging Finnegan's Wake because of bad binding.

This could be solved simply. With a creative graphic category.

grumble grumble... next year if need be? In which case I'll vote now. ( WOW that was tough )

On a side note, I think it's amusing that more people have voted on the narrow-minded award than any other. People are more upset at those two companies than are happy with others, heh.

Personally, I'm rather disappointed to see that Codemasters are effectively going to win two awards.

After their behaviour and attitude with F1 2010 and F1 2011, I've decided that I'll vote with my wallet. ;) I won't support a dev/pub who ships something broken by design, refuses to fix it saying it'll take too long, promises that it'll be fixed in the next years' release... where it isn't. But we're not voting on broken game mechanics - purely on widescreen/Surround implementation... where at least they seem to get that right.

That said, I cast my vote, other cast theirs... democracy at work. ;)

Can't say I've played many recent Codemasters games, but I really do wish Croteam was getting more love from our poll. Something I noticed in the latest SS3:BFE update:
Code:
- FOV slider now shows its value.
   - Moved FOV menu slider to graphics options.
   - Changed FOV lower bound from 75 to 60 degrees.
   - FOV override now works in versus games.

I get a laugh from item 3. Accomodating the console-addicted, I suppose!

But at least the FOV is still adjustable. That's the key thing.

I'm also not a big fan of Codemasters. When it comes to trigger-finger shooters like BF2, BC2, CoD, and the like, dedicated servers is pretty much a must, especially in the competitive area. When I saw Operation Flashpoint, I thought it'd look nice as a FPS game until something decent come out. Then I hear that it's all based on peer-to-peer networking, which throws me off. Even though the game looks nice and has some interesting aspect about it, the fact that a quick-reflex shooting game running over P2P ruined it for me. I had noticed on their forums that people have been calling out Codemasters to make a dedicated server for the game but it seems as though it never came to be.

I still firmly believe that the big winners ought to be Croteam and Serious Sam 3. I'd rather look at the whole package and what it offers than saying which game is the best and has the best technical support for widescreen and multi-mon gaming solutions. The quality of the game as well as how the game is designed when multiplayer is involved should be taken into account. But that's just my opinion.
