My game started crashing on me too near the end of ep1. hl2exe has stoped working....

I get it when going to a new area that requries loading, then when I load up after the whole restart deal I am good for 1 or 2 more loaded areas before it crashes again.

I've never had a single issue with Steam on XP. I've never had to delete or clear out any files or anything. When I had Vista on one of my machines, I got a bunch of problems. The most annoying one I got is some of the games would start, then minimize to the taskbar. No matter how much I tried to restore the window, it would just minimize again or just stay minimized. I fixed it by reinstalling XP on that machine. :D

Strange, that same problem happened to me but on different games and on XP. My friend snooped around and said it had to do with DirectX, but then my games started working again and I didn't really give it a second thought.

i got Nero 8....upgraded Nero 7 through the site by downloading it. Dunno about a retail hard copy of Nero 8....should be out though.

it worked out of the blue or did it work because you updated DirectX?

could it be that Vista is the problem? what OS are you running?

I don't think Vista is the problem. I've been running Vista since it came out and zero issues with any games I've played on it thus far, including Stalker, Bioshock and just finished HL-2, Ep2.

The comment that strikes me is you said earlier games run fine (like butter apparently? :wink: )? But latest save doesn't? That is most likely your problem - a corrupted save.

If you play HL-2, start a new game, does it work fine? i.e. try and isolate if it is the game itself that is crashing or a particular saved game.

Once you have isolated the problem, you can try zeroing in on a cure. I would also try an revert any software changes to those prior to the crashes.

When things go wrong suddenly on a game that was running fine before, and no hardware changes, it is almost always something YOU have done, i.e. installed a new program, updated a driver, etc.
