Read Full Detailed Report - RollerCoaster Tycoon

RollerCoaster Tycoon is a simulation strategy computer game that features theme park management. Developed by MicroProse and Chris Sawyer and published by Hasbro Interactive, the game was released for Microsoft Windows on March 31, 1999 in North America and in Europe on April 12, 1999. Later that year, an expansion pack titled Corkscrew Follies (Added Attractions in Europe) was released. In 2000, a second expansion pack was released titled Loopy Landscapes. In 2002, a special edition was released titled RollerCoaster Tycoon Gold (Totally RollerCoaster in Europe), and in the following year, a second special edition titled RollerCoaster Tycoon Deluxe was released. Both editions included the base game along with both expansion packs. The game would also receive a port to the Xbox video game console on March 25, 2003. That version included the base game and both expansion packs.

Due to the game's worldwide success upon it's release, numerous sequels were released. It's isometric design carried over into its sequel, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. RollerCoaster Tycoon features 21 scenarios, the first five being unlocked. Successfully completing a scenario will unlock a new, additional scenario. A hidden scenario titled "Mega Park" is unlocked when all other scenarios are completed.

Unfortunately it does not work with the GOG release, I was unable to find the addresses specified in the table.

"WINDOWED:

computerlife22 has also found a way to enable your monitor's maximum resolution in WINDOWED MODE. To do this, use a hex editor such as the one listed above. Then, open your RCT.EXE file and find these hex strings:"

"05 00 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 FC 00 05 00" ------> replace with "07 80 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 FC 00 07 80"
"04 00 00 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 F4 00 04 00" -------> replace with "04 38 00 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 F4 00 04 38"

should be (my exe):

"05 00 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 FC 00 05 00" ------> replace with "07 80 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 FC 00 07 80"
"04 00 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 F4 00 04 00" -------> replace with "04 38 00 0F 8E 07 00 00 00 C7 45 F4 00 04 38"

:)

This hack doesn't work on the GOG version of the game, but I recently found some strings in the CSG1.1 and CSG1.dat similar to those described in the WSGF page - 20 03 and 58 02 hex values in a short string. I tried to modify the files for a widescreen resolution (1200x800), but nothing changed in the game - it kept running in 800x600.

The CSG-files seem to have something to do with the games graphics, and I couldn't find 20 03 and 58 02 values in a short string in any other file I had a look at. This makes me think I'm on the right path, but like I said it didn't work. Is anybody else interested in taking a look at this? Please PM me if you want a text file with the relevant string locations in CSG1.dat and CSG1.1.

I just released a hack to support computerlife22's work. It basically puts the hexedited game into fullscreen in native resolution. Download the hack here (includes a readme) http://digitalise.net/rct-native-fullscreen.zip or if you are interested in the code/compiling it yourself, visit my github https://github.com/abort/rct-native-fullscreen. You might want to add this to the wiki. Have fun.

Running the game on Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit) and I can't seem to get this to work. Followed the instructions and hexedited RCT.exe with the WINDOWED hack (which works) and when I run this .exe fullscreen hack nothing happens and I get a "...is not a valid Win32 application" error message. Was the hack compiled for 64 bit systems or later than Windows XP SP3? I have Visual Studio installed and downloaded the source files, anyone know how to compile it into a new executable that may work? Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: I fixed it! I was able to successfully compile a Win32 build from 'main.c' and 'main.h' from abort's Github page. I ran command prompt, and changed the directory to where I stored the source and header files, and executed 'gcc main.c' and it saved 'a.exe' which worked perfectly! Only one, small caveat, there are a few glitched pixels that run at the bottom of the toolbar in the game that I can't seem to fix. It's very minor and doesn't take away from running this game in fullscreen at 1080p! The game also runs faster than in WINDOWED mode. Not sure why but I definitely notice a much smoother framerate on my 10+ year old laptop :P

UPDATE 2: I found the cause of the pixels being glitched/cropped on the bottom of the game when in FULLSCREEN mode. It's the top part of the taskbar on Windows XP. It can be pretty annoying, but this patch/hack is 99% successful for Windows XP users. If anyone wants more information about this minor setback, PM me or comment below and I can provide screenshots and such if you wish to add more C++ code that could fix it or have any ideas you want to share. Happy Coaster building!

I downloaded and installed english, french, german, italian, spanish version from Gog, some info:
- the english version is the only to have packed rct.exe using Neolite. So you need to unpack it before to patch it
- the english version is the only version 1.20.0.15, so it needs different hex:
windowed resolution from 1280x1024 (default)
0500007E07C745FC000500
0400007E07C745F4000400
replace them by:
0780007E07C745FC000780
0438007E07C745F4000438
to obtain windowed resolution from 1920x1080
- french, german, italian, spanish rct.exe executable from Gog are not packed, are version 1.20.0.13 and you could use the patch from computerlife22
