tried this ini hack at 1680x1050, got the same problems as stated in this thread regarding the 1440x900 resolution. Jus a part of the startingscreen is visible.
What could be wrong?

Nothing. That is the anticipated behavior. There is a 1680x1050 pic a few posts back. You should have access to every menu option but quit. Which can be accomplished by pressing Alt+F4.

In game should be fine with just the journal screen misalignment.

1440x900 resolution works absolutely fine on my monitor, except that the zoom is no longer working. The start screen is displayed in 4:3 format (I think), all buttons are accessible. If the zoom issue does not bother you, you should give 1440x900 a try.

What zoom are you talking about? The automap screen?

Could you post a picture of the 1440x900 menu screen?

EDIT - Nevermind about the zoom. I found it. Thanks. Still would like the 1440x900 pics if possible. Thanks again.

I should mention that my version is 1.470 german. It was a full version on the cover DVD of GameStar magazine, Germany, issue 03/2007.

My monitor is a Medion MD3099PD S22 19". It was under €200, but I love it.
Hope the info was helpful! (And even if it wasn't, I learned how to post screenshots :P )

Thank you for your pics.

I went back and tested mine again and this is what I now get.

Reasons I may have been getting the original problem...

1-I typed the wrong res
2-Windows update changed something
3-Video card drivers update changed something
4-Custom resolution of 1440x900 was not added to my drivers
5-Computer gremlin

Oh well. It works now. 8)

I think the best way to go about this is to grade it as if the higher resolutions are not supported. It seems pretty clear that the game wasn't designed to handle things bigger than 1280x1024 in the first place, so we can just say "1440x900 and bigger *might* work, but use at your own risk, and expect problems."

==Grading==

Calculated grade: B

Major unresolved issues: None
Minor unresolved issues: None

Summary of widescreen-related flaws:
.ini solution.
Two-dimensional screens can be cropped or have misaligned text.
1440x900 and greater are "unstable."

Cranky's coverage estimate: 100%
