This sounds really interesting as a concept. I agree PLP seems to be the ideal setup, I've just put two old 17" 1280x1024 TN monitors (rotated) either side of my 24" 1920x1200 IPS display, giving me a roughly 4k x1200 display area and it's great just for windows, but of course there's no support for...
