I want to upgrade my GPU and my monitors and have the following question:

If I choose a HD6870 Eyefinity6 and three monitors with display port + two monitors with DVI/HDMI.
Is it correct that i DON'T need any ACTIVE (!) DP adaptors to connect all five monitors ...

Hrm. Well I gave it a go. Upgrading from 5x1P 11.8 preview.

- Driverswept. Rebooted. Installed (custom) 11.10p3. Booted. 5x1P working on login screen. Bluescreen shortly after login.

If I had 3x 30"s already, I would find it hard to part with them.. and would just make the journey to 5x 30", including machine upgrade. Although certainly it'd take longer to get there. If you added 24" screens as wings, how do your 30"s look when scaled down to 1920x1200?

This is because your resolution is not yet set to something other than the single display resolution.

That makes sense, I was in extended mode at 6000x1920 before enabling Eyefinity, so never ran into it.

After creating the Eyefinity group it automatically went on to "Arrange Eyefinity Display Group", where you click on the blue screens to indicate what is where physically. You could try doing that bit from the Eyefinity submenu? Or try ...

11.8 doesn't include 5x1 sadly. You need to install 11.8 preview, then 5x1 will be available. If it's not, then run driver sweeper first and it should show up.

Right, 2GB in this case means 1GB per GPU. Which is all that matters.

I would honestly just try it first on your existing 5970. Your main issue is going to be running out of VRAM with only 1GB I suspect.. buying another 5970 for 4x crossfire wouldn't help with that at all.

Those DLPs seem impossible to get in Europe, which may help explain why it's rarer to find such a setup. Plus the newness of nvidia 3d surround.
