I've been using 3x1 Eyefinity since the HD 5770. I've moved from that to HD 6870, tried HD 6870 CFx (no good for me), sold the 6870's and am now using HD 6950.

So far [knock on wood] the only oddity when using Eyefinity now is with the lock-picking. That mini-game gets zoomed in to about 30 times its normal size. But, at least it zeroes in on the lock so I can still do it.

No no i dont mean this. All my screens are in landscape configuration. what i mean is that i have 3 screens. 1 in DVI , the 2 in HDMI the 3 in miniDisplay port.
When i use only 2 of them , eyfinity works just fine. But when i connect the third one. then one of the screens becomes identify but not ...

Anytime the two cards are Crossfired, you will not be able to use the outputs for the secondary card. This, at least, has been my own experience. So, in Crossfire, only the outputs of the primary card are usable.

Since the problem follows that particular monitor, I think you are on the right track to RMA it. Keep us posted on the outcome.

it's a dell xps, with a q9450 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, radeon 5870 1gb, 980w psu.

Well, the tearing is an issue for me. So this means I 1. have to get a Flex card, or 2. get three monitors with (mini)DP outputs. However, choice number 2 is very, very expensive. But getting active adapters is also expensive, so I guess I getting a Flex card. Am I about right in my conclusions ...

So if I were to connect my monitors like this: 1 x DVI, 1 x HDMI and 1 x DVI to mDP, will it work? Or is the Flex edition just an overall better choice?

As for "will it work" you should be able to get Eyefinity working, yes. But, with this configuration, I would almost expect tearing on all ...

so that one monitor is connected via displayport and the other two
via DVI.

this started happening this week... after a few minutes (30, 40) of
gaming, the two monitors connected via DVI would start ...

The way I have my own HD 6870 connected for Eyefinity is using 2 x DVI + Mini-DP->DVI active adapter. And, yes, I get tearing on the DP-connected monitor. In order to not be so distracted by this, I make the DP-connected monitor one of the end monitors since gaming action takes place on the CENTER ...

Everything you've listed is very acceptable except for the displays....IMHO. If I were to do Eyefinity again from scratch, I'd very definitely opt for native DP connection on the displays.
