Sorry to hear you had such a bad time.
You didn't mention what luck you'd had with Left 4 Dead. The competitive multiplayer community in Left 4 Dead is probably the nastiest towards new players. Don't bother for now. On the other hand, Left 4 Dead's co-op is pretty accepting of all skill levels ...
