Just an update for people who is still working on this problem:
I had the chance to work with a Vaio notebook which has a Radeon9200 video card and a widescreen monitor.
To my surprise, in that laptop the option "Stretch maintaining aspect ratio" WAS THERE, enabled... I tried installing ...
