It didn't work by just removing the FOV line... but after some browsing around I found this:

I put it all in an autoexec.cfg file in the base directory and it seems to have resolved the issue.. not 100% sure it was that since I ...

seta g_fov "100"
seta r_mode "-1"
Could it be the FOV value that is buggering me?
