aggies > in your HL2 (or hypothetical) example you are forgetting that at both WS and 4:3 (which you say does the same as Bioshock but the other way around - or something) the FOV is changed to ensure it's not unnaturally zoomed in.

The game does the same for me in widescreen mode if my desktop is running at a higher horizontal res than what the game is running at. The easy solution:
Change your desktop res to 1280x800 before running the game. That may not be the solution you were looking for, but it works for me.

First off, make sure the game isn't overwriting the settings you enter into the DoomConfig.cfgn file. Some have repoerted the settings they enter get overwritten. Screens From Doom 3 With Patch 1.05 Beta
