The options screen has two display modes - stretched and centered. Selecting "stretched" makes the game output 800x600 resolution normally. Selecting "centered" makes it output your native resolution, but the actual viewport is just a 800x600 window in the middle of a black screen. So the only support for widescreen resolutions that is actually part of the game is activated by using "centered."
The term for this game's screen change would be "windowboxed," but we don't have a grade for that. And IMO, I don't think we should even recognize windowboxed gameplay as supporting widescreen.
