HDMI Licensing officially announced HDMI 2.0. The v2 spec has 18Gbps bandwidth and can carry 3,840 x 2,160 resolution video at @ 60fps. The connector itself is unchanged, and HDMI Licensing claims current high-speed Category 2 wires can handle the increased bandwidth. Additionally, some companies have suggested upgrade paths for UHDTVs already on the market, and the new spec will natively support 21:9 widescreen displays.

I've read about it, and it's kinda interesting to me. DisplayPort has the bandwidth, but since there no real regulation for it, hdtv makers and content producers shied away from it. Bhere's the real kicker, the reason you haven't seen any monitors with single DP that doesn't require built in MST is because there are no TCON's (display controllers) that can support such a high resolution. When these controllers get made, I do see 4K monitors supporting 60Hz over DP and HDMI 2.0.
