I have a 5870-based gaming system on the way and trying to plan for 2.35:1 gaming.

Will the 5870 and most newer games allow me to run 1920x817 resolution out of the box or do I need to get something like powerstrip?

My situation is that I have a 16:9 1080p projector that I use with a 2.35:1 screen. I do not have an anamorphic lens, so HDTV and PS3 are pillar-boxed on the screen, while for blu-rays I zoom in the projector to get a full screen image with the letterbox bands hang off the top and bottom of screen. The projector does support 1:1 pixel mapping, which I'm hoping means it will accept a 1920x817 input and just center it in the panel.

Does this sound like it should work, or will I need to get more creative for 2.35:1 gaming?

Thanks for any input,
Paul

Alienware Aurora i920, ATI 5870, JVC RS20 150" 2.35:1 projection

I cannot help you with your query.

However, I take it your screen is fairly old? IIRC there was a lot of mislabeling of 2.39:1 as the older 2.35:1. This would mean a different resolution.

No, the screen is only about 8 months old, a Da-Lite Cinemascope Hi-Power. I haven't actually measured to confirm it is 2.35 vs 2.39. Shouldn't matter much for this question: if I can do 1920x817 then I can probably also do 1920x803. I guess my real question is: will the 5870 drivers, and newer games let me set arbitrary resolutions?

More to the point, is there a way I can play Richard Burns Rally, GT Legends, NFS Shift, WoW and/or Dawn of Discovery in 2.35:1?

Cheers,
Paul

It's been a while since i used ATI, but i never had issues making custom resolutions, and most games detect them with a problem. Though i DO recall having to use a 3rd party program to make those resoluitons.. But maybe that' changed by now.

And yes, 2.39:1 is quite often referred to as 2.35:1. But does it really matter? as long as your width in pixels is 1920 or less.

Just closing the loop on this for any interested parties. I got everything working using this article from futuremark on how to set custom resolutions in CCC. Everything looks amazing, and as an added bonus 1920x817 is a brain-dead easy resolution for the 5870 to drive.

Powerstrip does not support the 5870 yet nor, from the sounds of it will it work any time soon.

Cheers,
Paul
