I've done some searching around, and read this post:
http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=27219

We're a school district that already has a bunch of 55" flat screen TV's that we want to make into a video wall - movies with VLC, powerpoints, etc. No gaming or anything super demanding. Obviously, being a school district, our funds are pretty low.

Ideally, I think we'll end up having 9 total screens (3x3). Would this setup work for what we're trying to do? Keep in mind, I know there are better specs out there, but sticking to a budget is important.

Mini Display Port to HDMI adapters:

if we need more than 6 outputs, we would buy a couple of these:

As far as machine specs, here is a low end but not horrible machine setup:
CPU - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MU00IOQ/ref ... V4KH&psc=1

MOBO - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T7XTT6C/ref ... 457A0DCD9R

PSU - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0092ML0OC/ref ... UVUP&psc=1

I would throw 8GB of RAM into it, and an extra SSD sitting around here.

One thing you should be aware of is that Eyefinity does NOT work in a 9 screens 3x3 setup (at least to my latest knowledge). You can have 9 monitors, but you can't use them in Eyefinity SLS (Single large surface) mode, only in extended mode. So you cannot span Programs over the whole monitor.

Thats no problem for VLC as you can span VLC over extended Monitors with a few tricks. But I have no idea if this also works with PowerPoint.

I think the professional cards like firepro support more solutions in Eyefinity but I'm not sure on that.

Thanks for the info. What are the limitations for it then? (as far as 2x3, 3x4, etc)

Non - professional cards have a max of 6 displays. I believe 2x3, 6x1 are the biggest ones. You can use professional cards and use multiple cards.

Of you want to use gaming cards, there are adapters that can spam two monitors and that would allow you 12 monitors on one card.

Yeah, so I was thinking of using the non-professional card with adapters if we needed more than 6. What would professional cards be considered (FirePro w600?). I'm basically looking for the cheapest way to get more than 6, but was told that I can't use 2 cards and have them all display one image (they would be different display groups, and I read that you can't join display groups. is that not true?).

Would I be able to use 2 of the w600 firepro cards and have them display all 12 outputs as one monitor/display group?

Thanks! :)

Firepro cards can have disiplay groups that span multiple cards.

If you want to use gaming cards, you're going to need an adapter like this and not an MST HUB. A DualHead2Go would also work. But then you'll be spending money on a lot of adapters.

I'd probably go the multiple FirePro cards route.

Cards that Support Eyefinity 6 (5 as well)
