So my plans for buying a widescreen have definitely met an obstacle. This Anandtech article [/url] http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2746&p=3
Well, damn.

I was all set to buy a Viewsonic VX2025 next week, but now, if I can't run oblivion at that monitors native resolution, is there really a point to going widescreen?

Sorry if I'm missing some very obvious answers to this problem, but I'm just now learning all I need to know about monitors, widescreen or otherwise.

So, I guess my question is, is there any way I can still play oblivion, maxed out, on this monitor? How bad will things really look at a non-native res.?

Thanks for any advice,

Kenshi

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM SATA
Powercolor X1900XT 512MB
Corsair XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR 400 (
Hiper Type-R 580W Modular PSU
Antec P180 Mid Tower

came to the conclusion that "there isn't a single GPU or pair of GPUs today that will run Oblivion at 1600 x 1200 with everything turned on smoothly".

Well, damn.

wtf, my XTX plays it fine... if you want 43281749812489724fps then by all means you will be diapointed, but 1680 is perfectly playable imo.

Dude i've got an x800xt, Athlon 64 3500+, and 1 gig of DDR3200, and i can run Oblivion at 1680x1050 with everything on, view distances at about 3/4 and get REALLY playable fps WITH 4xAA and 8xAF.

Your system is MUCH better than mine... you'll be fine.

Im playing Oblivion at 1920x1200 with everything maxed plus high res textures and some extra reg tweaks to improve image quality.

You'll have no probs ataining a playable framerate at that resolution.

As Gilly said, dont expect an insane rate, but i easily get 40fps with the setting above, and dropping to 20 in heavily wooded areas. IMO, that fine for a game such as Oblivion.

I am looking forward to how the next gen cards will cope with it though :)

Glad to hear it's more than playable. Can't wait to get my widescreen :P

I just built a new system, and the monitor is the last piece to upgrade. I'm running a 15" LCD right now...even if I have to turn a couple things down, anything will be an improvement over this pipsqueak display.

So, maybe I won't be able to crank up AA, but I've read that jaggies aren't as much of a problem at high resolutions, so AA isn't as necessary. In many of the benchmarks I've seen turning on anti-aliasing cuts the framerate almost in half.

If you don't use HDR you'll have a much better framerate in Oblivion. Bloom and AA work pretty well together. I run it at 1680x1050 with this monitor, and to be honest there was hardly a framerate drop from my old monitor and 1024x768 res.

I wouldnt worry about it at all mate, you'll easily max the settings out with that setup.

While was having problems with my X2, i switched it out for a Venice 3200+ and didnt chance my setttings in Oblivion at all, it still ran great.

The game is very GPU dependant, and your 1900XT will be able to run everything maxed out, heck i turn on 16xAF and 2xAA and it looks and runs great!

:D Beautiful. 'cause I built this setup for oblivion...hadn't upgraded in years, and this is the game that made me finally step up my system.

So this game essentially cost, oh, $2000. But I try no to think about that.

I'd like to know where you came up with that number for FPS...that is exactly both of my children's social security numbers in order of birth. The Police are on their way to your house as we speak. I'll be watchin' you watchin you. Do not leave, do not attempt to run. Resistance is futile.
