Read Full Detailed Report - The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the timeless classics in the adventure game genre, originally released in 1990. It combines epic adventure with dry and witty humor, and made a name for LucasArts as a serious game developer.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is an update/remake released in 2009 featuring redrawn high resolution graphics, complete voice-overs, and remixed music. It also includes the classic CD-ROM version of the game, with no voice-overs and low res artwork and sprites. Uniquely, you can toggle between the two versions of the game on the fly with the press of a single button.

==Grading==

Grade: B+

Pillarboxing in TH is a blemish.

CCE: 100%

Gotta ask, what else would it do in triplehead? Stretch?

The entire game is pre-drawn 2D, there's nothing to expand past 16:9 :P

Well, there are a couple of horizontally scrolling areas of the game. Theoretically the engine could be programmed to have those areas be hor + on wide aspect ratios. That would probably be tricky to program and not break compatibility with classic mode, but it could be done.

There was a time when this would have gotten a perfect grade, but too many WSGF members complained about games with black bars, and I had to come up with a compromise. Requiring TH support is the result.

Is the title screen squished in 4:3 like it is on the console version?

Yes, though it doesn't wait for you to press start. It just flashes for about half a second and then moves on to the main menu. It's almost more like a splash screen than a title screen. Either way, it doesn't get factored into the grading.
