Full Detailed Report - Ultima VII
Ultima 7 is an RPG from Origin Systems. You play as the Avatar, and are once again summoned to the world of Britannia. 200 years have passed in Britannia since your previous adventures, and the land is plagued by troubles occuring all at once. A bizzarre series of ritualistic murders have been committed, magic is crumbling, mages are going insane, and a zealous cult called "The Fellowship" is becoming widely accepted to the point where it holds much political power. An omnipresent, omniescient, and sinister being calls himself "The Guardian." He is present from the beginning, and his motives aren't immediately clear, but is clearly up to no good. You must investigate these problems, find out if they are connected, and spend the rest of the series putting an end to them. Exult is a source port that lets the game run in Windows with various enhancements, including support for widescreen resolutions. It may be downloaded here:http://exult.sourceforge.net/ The game data is not included, but it is compatible with both "parts" of Ultima 7, as well as both expansion packs (Forge of Virtue and Silver Seed). All four were originally sold separately.

The only flaw that I didn't notice listed here...is that you should be trying to play the game in it's original resolution.

320x200 in 4:3

Which is tough.
You have to either have a CRT monitor, so you can stretch out the resolution...or have an LCD with the ability to switch it's scaler to 4:3

Exult is a great source port, but they really need to add this resolution fix, because right now it's impossible to play widescreen, because widescreen is always stretched, and you have to squash it to get the games true resolution.

Here is the game as it runs normally, even in full screen mode (stretched)

Here is how the game is meant to run (NOT stretched)

It would be ideal if we had a way to run the game like this, and widescreen.

I'm not really convinced that Ultima VII was meant to be played using tall pixels. I'm sure that's how most people played it, but honestly I think a lot of 320x200 DOS games look better using square pixels. Back during the DOS days, I'd decrease the v-stretch setting of my CRT for a lot of these games. Some graphical elements might look better vertically stretched, but IMO the game world doesn't. I chalk this up to some of the graphics designers working with higher resolutions and square pixels, and not taking into account that most of the players would use tall pixels.

The first place to look for information on a game is the Detailed Report. The DR will detail any fixes that are required to play a game in widescreen or multi-monitor, and show pictures of the gameplay with the fixes in place. It will also outline any problems that you may expect to find in the game, and list resolutions that the game has been successfully tested on. Find all our Detailed Reports in the Master Game List, or using the Search All Games option under Games in the top menu.
